Dr Prem Naidoo is a consultant psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience in psychotherapy with a special interest in Anxiety-Depression and related conditions. He currently works as a consultant in private practice in Sydney.
After attending boarding school in Swaziland, Prem started studying medicine in Scotland at St Andrews. Completing his training at the University of Manchester he trained in psychiatry in the UK and in Australia and became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
He has very widespread experience in all aspects of psychiatry having worked and trained at more than twenty hospitals and community centres in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. He has worked as the director of two acute psychiatric units in Australia including the Northside Clinic in Sydney. Prem has worked in private practice in Sydney for some years and he currently works from from rooms in St Leonards.
His special interest is in the innovative and unusual manifestations and presentations of anxiety disorders and the treatment of them predominantly from a psychotherapeutic point of view. This interest started from his earliest involvement with psychiatric training when he was involved in innovatively combining pharmacological and psychotherapeutic therapies in relation to the treatment of what would now be called functional neurological disorders (FND).
He believes that the self is the most significant aspect of psychological stability in the individual and determines stability or vulnerability. The self therefore and its relatedness to the world are the fundamental building blocks of security in every human being. Vulnerability in this sphere is the primary pathology leading to a host of psychiatric disorders all having anxiety as their most commonly expressed symptomatology. This has been exemplified in the Royal College of Psychiatrists' conference of 2023 where the definition of trauma has been acknowledged as "the experience of an adverse event when your mind feels alone".
Apart from his professional commitments Prem has also set up an educational charitable project in Thailand, an attempt to help poorer schoolchildren from Isaan, the north-east of Thailand to stay in school in order that they might have an opportunity to gain meaningful employment. This has fuelled an interest in Buddhism and particularly Theravada Buddhism as practiced in Thailand.
